NURS 6050 Healthcare Insurance and Drug Prescription Topics
NURS 6050 Healthcare Insurance and Drug Prescription Topics
The population health problems that have risen to the presidential levels are healthcare insurance and prescription drug topics. These problems have inflicted the American people’s health and financial status. Many individuals have to choose to purchase their prescription or buy foods for the month. The choice they make can affect their health either way. These topics at hand had hit worldwide and called for improving healthcare laws. Healthcare policies are about improving health to decrease healthcare costs. Laureate Education, “the way to improve healthcare is by improving healthcare policy.” When healthcare policies are improved, individual’s health improves.
Former President Obama’s administration implemented healthcare for all [ACA] (Milstead & Short, 2019). Former President Donald Trump’s administration aimed to replace or reform the ACA with a tax deduction, no denial for preexisting health conditions, and decrease prescriptions drug costs (Lambrew, 2018). President Trump supported the transport from overseas drugs for lower costs and the development of more generic drugs (KKF, 2016). Although, both presidents implemented ways to address and improve healthcare for all people to obtained equal quality services. Many Americans are still without healthcare insurance, treated unfairly, and struggling to pay for their medicines. Healthcare has made positive changes, but I do believe more work is needed to better the process.
I can make a difference by being knowledgeable and an advocator for healthcare policies reform. At my local facility adhering to the policies and familiarizing myself with the current policies can be beneficial. Also, contacting elected officials for guidance is an advantage to promote healthcare reform. As a nurse, I can also reform healthcare policies.

Hi Debra,
Thank you for your post. Which topic is most important to you? If you were President, what would you do differently to solve the problem?

Dr. Squellati,
Thanks for responding! If I was president, I would focus on individuals prescription plan. Especially in the elderly population, who are often neglected. They should not have to choose between food or prescription drugs. My plan would consist of federal funds for prescription drugs. President Trump’s administration made plans for Part D to be effective in 2021 to lower premiums so prescriptions can be affordable (CMS, 2020).

Hello Debra
I enjoyed reading your post. The issue of skyrocketing prescription drug prices is a fundamental cause of concern. When I reach out to some patients, they will verbalize they have not picked up their prescription because they are waiting for their social security check. You mentioned a great point that many older adults are left to choose to buy their medications or buy food at times. President Trump’s policy on capping the cost of insulin on some Medicare enrollees is an excellent move on helping our elderly with less out-of-pocket medication costs. Some of the policies that lower the cost of medications for the consumer has the impact of high and increasing prescription drug costs on payers (American Academy of Actuaries, 2018). The Trump Administration has prioritized policies that introduce choice and competition in Part D, resulting in lower prices for life-saving drugs like insulin (cms.gov, 2020). However, as a result, some payers are removing high-cost drugs from their list of preferred medicines leaving patients to pay out of pocket or high copays for these high-cost drugs. The focus should be on lowering the price of the medication, not focusing on coverage. When medications are affordable, it promotes compliance.
Milstead & Short state that the design phase of the policy is the point at which the original intention of a solution to a problem is understood and appropriate tools are employed to achieve success (2019). Our problem is that the medication prices continue to increase, and each new drug comes out at a higher cost. When addressing prescription drug prices, there is a need to employ different strategies like streamlining the drug approval process, eliminating tactics that discourage generic utilization, and negotiating or regulating drug prices (American Academy of Actuaries, 2018). Do you believe the policy’s goal should be to lower the overall cost of medications or just the out-of-pocket costs?

Martha,
Thanks for responding! You made many great points and shared great information! You are so right! The plan is supposed to be cost-effective, not to increase cost somewhere else. It is sad. Many individuals want their meds to feel better and live. You would think we all would be on one accord. Thank you!

RE: MAIN POST RE: Discussion – Week 1

Hello Debra:
Thank you for a well-written discussion. I agreed that health care policies need to be improved to have improved health. Nurses’ understanding of health care policies is a big step to improved health in their community and nation. Nursing professionals must lead health care policy reforms to create a health care environment that improves public health outcomes as the change in population and disease structure accelerates(Han, 2020).
I agreed that President Obama and President Trump tried to make health care available and accessible to all individuals, but health care is still expensive for most people. The cost is high, but no patient is turned back for health care services in the Unites States of America compared to other nations where their people are turned back if they cannot pay for health care.
Knowledge is power, and the more nurses understand health policies, the more they can get involved and effect changes. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), implemented in September 2010, has increased insurance coverage and affordability of care and was expected to increase the receipt of women’s preventative services(Raymond et al., 2021). The ACA makes it possible for young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance until they are 26 years of age, making it possible for most young adults to complete their education without thinking of insurance costs.
