Alternate Living Environments: Part One
The Alternate Living Environments assignment is divided into two parts. Part One of this assignment is due in Week Four, and Part Two is due in Week Six. For these assignments, your team will use the facility you selected in Week Four (an assisted living facility, an intermediate care facility, a long-term care facility, or a room and board facility).
The first part of the assignment is an opportunity for your team to investigate the living environment with a focus on the specific facility. The tasks required for the second part of the assignment (due in Week Six) will include an interview with a leader from that facility.
Develop a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which your team describes various aspects of the chosen facility. Include responses to the following:
- Identify the demographics of the community.
- Why did you select the facility?
- How are the family and provider roles considered in the selection?
- What resources are available for the patient, family, and provider?
- Provide an overview of the selected facility.
- What is the corporate structure of the facility?
- What is the leadership structure of the facility?
- Location of the living environment
- Compare and contrast the demographics of the facility to the community.
- Is it close to medical facilities and community support? Expand.
- Is transportation available? How does this have an impact on the family or caregivers?
- What other living environments are available in your community, and what are the major differences between them?
- How is this facility marketing itself? Is it competitive?

Delegation–Authorizing an unlicensed person to provide nursing services while retaining accountability for how the unlicensed person performs the task. It does not include situations in which an unlicensed person is directly assisting a RN by carrying out nursing tasks in the presence of a RN.

(b) Health Maintenance Activities (HMAs), as defined in this chapter that do not fall within the practice of professional nursing, may be performed by an unlicensed person in accordance with this section without being delegated. (a) A RN may delegate to medication aides the administration of medication to clients in long term care facilities and home health agencies if: (1) the medication aide holds a valid permit issued by the appropriate state agency to administer medications in that facility or agency; (2) the RN assures that the medication aide functions in compliance with the laws an regulations of the agency issuing the permit; and (3) the route of administration is oral, via a permanently placed feeding tube, sublingual or topical including eye, ear or nose drops and vaginal or rectal suppositories.
(b) The following tasks may not be delegated to the Medication Aide Permit Holder unless allowed and in compliance with Chapter 225 of this title (relating to RN Delegation to Unlicensed Personnel and Tasks not Requiring Delegation in Independent Living Environments for Clients with Stable and Predictable Conditions): (1) calculation of any medication doses except for measuring a prescribed amount
During Part One of the Alternate Living Environments assignment, your team selected an alternative living facility in your community and presented an overview of that facility. The assignment for Week Six provides your team with the opportunity to learn more about that facility.
Conduct an interview with an administrator from the chosen facility. You can use the following, or similar, questions for the interview:
- Is there a waiting list for your facility?
- How are new demographics affecting your facility?
- What marketing methods do you use to promote your facility?
- Who is the primary payer source–out-of-pocket or private pay, insurance coverage, Medicare, or Medicaid?
- Are there any personal or nursing care services available in your living environment?
- What is the staff or organizational structure that supports the services available in your facility?
- Are there any special amenities, such as a barber, beauty shop, or ice cream parlor?
- If there are no special services on site, is transportation provided to nearby service facilities?
- What recreational opportunities are available? Provide a list of opportunities.
- What technological issues or challenges are present at the facility?
- How do you anticipate health care reform will affect your facility?
- How will medicine and health related services that increase the longevity of the aging population have an impact on your facility?
- What improvements would you, the administrator, like to make to the facility in the future?
- Is there any current research in the field or study of gerontology that might affect the future planning for your facility, perhaps related to demographic data, health, and well-being?
Create a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation outlining the major takeaways from your interview.
Include a copy of your questions and responses with your presentation. These can be included in the speaker notes or in a separate document.
